History, sacred and profane, alone preserves the remembrance of Babylon; and of Gotham we possess scarcely any other memorial than the immortal lines to be found in the titlepage of this work. And this example furnishes a striking proof of the importance of heroes, poets, and philosophers, in cities and states.
