Description:The dualistic government of the late middle ages, composed of king and estates, underwent cycles in which for a period the monarch was strong, only to weaken in the face of advances by the aristocracy. In Bohemia in the 1390s, the nobility stopped the trend towards an increase in royal power, beginning one which by 1471 had brought them into a commanding position in the realm. It was in the course of these years that the Hussite revolution, lasting from 1419 to 1434, swept through the country. The fact that the Hussites were able to prevent the legitimate heir, King Sigismund of Hungary, from taking the throne obviously helped the estates, especially the nobility in obtaining a position of superiority. The nobles' wars with the king in the 1390s, their contributions to the Hussite revolution and their gains during the reigns of Kings George and Vladislav suggest that their involvement with Hussitism was part of their overall drive for hegemony in the realm. However, an examination of the nobility in action reveals no unified approach to the issues of church reform and shows that the political achievements of the revolution fell to them by default.
