Il lettore può non cercarlo consapevolmente, ma se non c'è ne sentirà la mancanza. Nei racconti lunghi e complessi, il nocciolo può essere occultato sotto strati di accessori: intrecci complicati, sottotrame, descrizioni, dissertazioni. Ma nel racconto breve tutto viene eliminato tranne il nocciolo, che si presenta al lettore senza orpelli, e come un ago soffiato da una cerbottana resterà conficcato in lui a lungo. Eccovi qui una cinquantina di aghi, ciascuno lanciato dalla cerbottana di un maestro in questo campo."
