Myers, an African American Cleveland barber, was Ohio's most important Black Republican for many years. His father, Isaac Myers, a leading member of Baltimore's free Black community, became a founder of the National Labor Union and an outspoken advocate of cooperative enterprise as well as racial equality. His son, however, eschewed a union career to become a businessman, pioneering porcelain fixtures, individual wash basins and telephones at every chair. Elbert Hubbard called his establishment "the best barber shop in America," and, indeed, Myers cut the hair of eight US Presidents, dozens of Congressmen, Mark Twain, Lloyd George, and other luminaries. In 1892, his vote enabled Mark Hanna to gain control of Ohio's Republican party. He shared Hanna's business conservatism but remained an outspoken advocate of racial equality.
