Description:To most of us the word gunpowder conjures up pictures of cascading fireworks, rockets soaring into the sky, and Catherine wheels doing their utmost to propel themselves across the garden lawn. Fireworks day, November 5th. It was on this day in 1605 Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators proposed to blow up the King and his ministers with barrels of gunpowder smuggled into the vaults beneath the Houses of Parliament. They wished to avenge the harsh treatment Roman Catholics were subjected to under the reign of James I. They were betrayed, and Guy Fawkes and his gang were arrested and subsequently hanged. The Dartmoor gunpowder factory occupies a much more recent period in history. Situated on the north side of the Moretonhampstead to Princetown road, a mile or so west of Postbridge, the remains are to be found of this most interesting industry. On this site between 1844-1897 operated Devon's sole gunpowder factory. Powdermills Farm is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, and is now used for rough grazing. The ruins can be viewed from the Lych Way, a path which runs from the Cherrybrook car park (alongside the B3212) across the moor to the powder mills, over a clapper bridge and leaving the ruins behind, heads off over the ridge towards Wistman's Wood.
