Description:Excerpt from 7th Annual Announcement of Fulton and Trueblood's School of Elocution and Oratory, 1885 This institution, now in its seventh year, is the outgrowth of a general demand for thorough and practical instruction in the science and art of expression, and for the diffusion of a correct knowledge of the vocal resources of our language. There seems to be but little need of remark upon the necessity of establishing such a school, since its aim is to supply this demand. The study of a correct delivery of thought is co-important with the acquirement of knowledge. While a poor expression of good composition does not render the matter wholly unintelligible, yet, on account of the absence of the graces of elocution, it destroys effects that would otherwise be produced. The keenest conceptions of the studious mind are never mistaken when they issue from a rationally trained organ. Of the many young men and women who are graduated from our colleges and universities every year, and go out into the practical field of life, but few have any knowledge whatever of the principles of elocution. They are generally unskilled in the use of their voices, and can not properly command their resources. In order that this may be remedied, correct modes of expression must be introduced into all institutions of learning that make any pretensions to dignity and proficiency. By teaching correct expression to theological and law students, we may expect better speaking in the pulpit and at the bar; by establishing a rational and natural standard of elocution and oratory, the people will be educated, their tastes refined, and bad delivery on rostrum or stage will no longer be tolerated. One of the most prominent features of this school is the preparation of teachers of Elocution who will assist in establishing a correct system in our institutions of learning. Experience has taught that those who are graduated from an established school of oratory possess superior advantages over those who receive their instruction at random from travelling teachers.
