When Joly is injured in an accident and leaves school, he is replaced by an Algerian girl, Myriam, who introduces the boys to sex in a depraved fashion in the place under the stairs -- Joly's place -- which Francois has discovered. Francois deceives his older brother Gerard who clumsily proffers his friendship; but ultimately, when deceit has involved Francois in Myriam's pregnancy by another boy and her death by attempted abortion, his front breaks, and he turns to his brother for help, an innocent who has explored and experienced evil.
