Description:Clarence B. Bagley (1843-1932) was born in Troy Grove, Illinois; at 9 years of age, Clarence and his family journeyed across plains and Rocky Mountains to near Salem, Oregon. Clarence became a clerk in the Surveyor General's office, in Olympia. This position brought him into contact with influential men engaged in building a new government for Washington territory. He then was appointed the Territorial Printer, but his true passion was writing about local history -- of which he had played a role as an active participant. Fort Nisqually was the first permanent settlement of white men on Puget Sound. Fort Vancouver had been headquarters since l825 and Fort Langley was founded near the mouth of the Fraser river. Fort Nisqually was, therefore. a station which served to link these two together. While the primary object of the Hudson's Bay Company was to collect furs, nevertheless, the great needs of their own trappers, and the needs of Russian America (Alaska), and the Hawaiian Islands and other places for foodstuffs, caused that Company to seriously think of entering into an agricultural form of enterprise. A daily record of occurrences was kept during all these years, but at the time of the ajudication of the companies' claims certain portions were taken to Victoria to be used as legal evidence. Bagley writes: "During the past two years it has been my good fortune to delve at will among the old records and correspondence of the early days at old Fort Nisqually, the earliest white man's home in what is now Western Washington. This has given me a clearer insight into the manners and customs of its people than any course of mere book reading."
