Description:Excerpt from Handy Lists of Technical Literature, Vol. 1 To obviate in a measure this difficulty, and furnish, at a price so low as to put it within the reach of everybody, a practical and timesaving key to the modern technological and technical literature of the last eight years, is the object of these Handy Lists, the first part of which is hereby submitted to the public. That it is free from mistakes and omis sions no one, who is acquainted with the difficulties attending work of this nature, would for a moment suppose, but I do claim that all pains have been taken in its preparation to insure accuracy, and to make it as complete as it is possible to do in a first attempt at working what is practically a new field. How far I have succeeded in my endeavor, an actual test in the hands of the public, whose needs it aims at supplying, will soon demonstrate and I should be under great obligations for sug gestions from those who use it for making it more useful for and supply ing its defects, in case it should be found of sufficient value to make a new edition desirable. This list includes all separate books in the branches of Useful Arts in general, Products and Processes used in Manufactures, Technology and Trades, of whose existence I could learn in any way, and pub lished within the period specified, arranged in alphabetical order, accord ing to the authors names or the first word of the titles of anonymous publications. Added to this, in the same alphabetical series, is an index of the subjects treated in these books, with numerous cross-references, among which will also be found, what has never been attempted before, references to the principal articles in the best cyclopaedias and parts of works devoted to other general subjects, omitting only those references to subjects which would be found in works on Civil Engineering, such as Bricks, Masonry, Stones, etc. The numbers following these subject entries refer to the numbers prefixed to each book in this list.
