The Irvine Diaries

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (23405 ratings)
Description:In 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine set off from Camp VI for the summit of Mount Everest. They were glimpsed briefly by Noel Odell before being hidden from view by gathering clouds, never to be seen again. The impact on the nation of the loss of these two climbers, particularly that of Mallory, the star of the mountaineering world, was profound and without precedent. The possible circumstances of the tragedy have been debated ever since but still no one can say what really happened beyond that the two climbers suffered a fall on the bleak north face of the mountain. Too readily it has been assumed that it must have been Irvine who had slipped and Mallory who had tried in vain to check the fall. There are no grounds whatsoever for this assumption. Young Andrew Irvine possessed all the physical and mental stamina necessary for the ascent of the world's highest peak. A rowing Blue at Oxford and a competent skier, he had climbed in North Wales and had taken part in an expedition to Spitsbergen in 1923. He was an engineer of great promise and a master of mechanical improvisation, adapting all the oxygen apparatus during the approach march to his own improved design. It was on the strength of his achievements that he had been invited to join the Everest expedition, and because of his fitness and suitability that he was selected by Mallory to accompany him on the final, and fatal, attempt on the summit.Much has been written about Mallory; nothing about Irvine. Now, after more than 50 years, the story of Irvine's brief but fulfilled life can be told, largely in his own words from his diaries writen during the expeditions to Spitsbergen and to Everest. In this biography of Andrew Irvine, illustrated with hitherto unpublished photographs, Herbert Carr redresses the balance and analyses afresh the possible circumstances that led to the fatal accident.--From the 1979 edition. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
