It also includes illustrations of the relevant military officers involved during this period of the Civil War. David Power Conyngham (1825-1883) was born in Crohane, County Tipperary, Ireland. When in the U.S., he joined the New York Herald in 1861 as a war correspondent. Conyngham's history of Sherman's march through the South is told from the perspective of a journalist, as opposed to the many accounts of soldiers. He seems to have been a civilian war correspondent in the early years of the war. He then became a captain and acting aide-de-camp to General Meagher at the battle of Chancellorsville. The author, acting in the capacity as army correspondent for the New York Herald, joined General Sherman's army at Chattanooga in March 1864. He served as volunteer aid-de-camp as well as correspondent. He attempted to gain accurate information by personal observation and by sharing the hardships of the camp, the fatigues of the march, and perils of the battlefield. At the time this book would appear in 1865, it offered a striking narrative of Sherman's campaign across Georgia; rich in detail and well supplied with lively anecdotes and character sketches.
