The Rus state would come to flourish as the "Kievan Rus'" during the 10th to 11th centuries, and then fragmented into a number of successor polities during the 12th to 15th centuries. Very little is known about the early Rus state of the 9th century. It originated in what is now Northwestern Russia, at the time a place of operations of the Varangians, the term for Norsemen venturing into Eastern Europe and south to Byzantium. Contemporary sources mention the people of the area under the name Rus' (Greek, Arabic ). The term "khaganate" is motivated by evidence that the population centers of the region, which may have included the proto-towns of Holmgard (Novgorod), Aldeigja (Ladoga), Lyubsha, Alaborg, Sarskoye Gorodishche, and Timerevo, were under the rule of a monarch or monarchs using the Old Turkic title khagan.
