Encountering the Spirit: The Charismatic Tradition (Traditions of Christian Spirituality)

CODE: 9781570756887
The charismatic tradition is most recently associated with the populist Pentecostal and Charismatic renewal movements of the twentieth century, which today claim an estimated 500 million adherents worldwide.
The origins of this tradition, however, extend to the earliest days of the Christian church with the experience of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. As Mark Cartledge shows, elements of this tradition--prophecy, healing, speaking in tongues, and other "gifts of the Spirit"--have continued throughout history. After setting this tradition in its theological and historical context, he proceeds to a thematic review of charismatic spirituality with chapters on praise and worship, inspired speech, the sanctified life, empowered kingdom witness, and the community of interpreters.
