Overview

明治・大正期の文学者、森鴎外の短編小説。初出は「中央公論」［1916（大正5）年1日。弟殺しの罪で島送りとなる喜助。彼を高瀬舟で護送する同心の羽田庄兵衛。同心は罪人である喜助の晴れやかな態度に疑問を持ち、理由を聞く。喜助は島送りに当たって二百文の銭をもらったと喜んでいる。また、弟殺しの経緯を聞くにおよんで、これが果たして殺人に当たるかどうか。同心、羽田は疑問を感じる。
