Holmes was bored. It was late autumn in 1895 and London had been immersed in a heavy, yellow fog for almost a week. There was nothing of interest in the papers and he could only cross-index his many files once.

And then a note came from Sherlock's older brother, Mycroft. "Must see you over Cadogan West. Coming at once." Cadogan West was an employee of the British government whose death by falling off a train had been in the papers. It was reported as an accident.
