I came to Whispering Pines with two suitcases, a teaching contract, and a smile I'd been faking for so long I forgot what my real one felt like. No family. No friends. No safety net. Just a small mountain town that didn't ask why I checked my locks three times before bed.

I was supposed to keep my head down. Teach my kids. Disappear into the trees. I was not supposed to end up on the floor of my burning classroom. And I was definitely not supposed to wake up in a firefighter's arms with his voice in my ear telling me I've got you, sweetheart open those eyes for me.

I've wanted three things my whole life. To be a firefighter. To stay in Whispering Pines. To have a family. I've got two of the three.

Then I pulled the new English teacher out of an arson fire and held her on the back of my rig while she shook in my coat. Just like that, the third one had a face. I don't fall slow. I don't fall halfway. I don't fall at all unless I'm staying down.

So when she finally tells me whose name she's been running from? He's going to have to come through me, this town, and every brother in my firehouse to get within ten feet of her again.
