The surgeon who just told me I’m not able to have children doesn’t know my daughter is also his.

Seven years ago, we had one night together and I left the next morning and never told him why.

Today I’m sitting on his exam table and he’s telling me the news like I’m any other patient.

His voice is calm and professional. Luckily he doesn’t recognize me.

Suddenly, the door swings open and my six-year-old daughter runs in and wraps herself around his leg.

She looks up at him and yells out, “Daddy!”

He laughs softly and kneels down to scoop her up, and says, “Well hello there princess, aren’t you adorable.”

She wraps her arms around his neck, and buries her face in his coat like she’s known him her whole life.

He looks over his shoulder at me, still smiling, and asks,

“How old is she?”
