From the Author Mindful Messages represents one destination in my life's journey. After writing the first edition and realizing my naivet�' about publishing, I felt compelled to write a quality second edition that would be more helpful to our youth. Also, the magnitude of devastation brought on by the HIV/AIDS pandemic among people of African decent is impacting people all over the world including many African American women and youth. And I felt a responsibility to do something. For me and many other aware African Americans, our eyes have been opened to the true social political implications of this disease. Yet the "veil of silence" and the lack of urgency still remain in our community. I am not HIV positive but nor do I have cancer or Alzheimer's. The point is HIV/AIDS is a disease like other incurable diseases. The only difference is HIV/AIDS is preventable. I heard someone say, "It takes two to create HIV/AIDS and only one person to stop it." This statement is very true. We have to begin to think and act in terms of "mindful intervention" as parents, mentors and educators to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in our community and around the world. We must encourage HIV testing and give our youth two messages: abstinence first and foremost for those who have decided to wait on having sex and safe sex for those who are sexually active. There is no in between. Mindful Messages through spoken word will educate, empower, entertain and enlighten.
